Water Hyacinth
Water hyacinth (scientific name: Eichhornia crassipes) is a free-floating aquatic plant known for its rapid growth and filtration capabilities in freshwater ecosystems. Water hyacinth has glossy, rounded leaves that are arranged in a rosette pattern, forming a dense mat on the surface of the water. The leaves are thick and waxy and have inflated petioles that help the plant float. The plant produces attractive lavender to violet flowers with yellow markings on a spike-like inflorescence held above the water surface.
Water hyacinth has the ability to absorb nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus from the water. In polluted water bodies, it can help in nutrient removal, improving water quality over time. Despite its invasive tendencies, dense mats of water hyacinth can provide habitat and shelter for various aquatic organisms such as small fish, frogs, and insects. This can contribute to biodiversity in certain ecosystems.
The dense mats formed by water hyacinth can help reduce shoreline erosion by absorbing wave energy and stabilizing sediment.
Please note: We recommend water temperatures be 65F(18.3C) or warmer before adding Water Hyacinth to ponds.
